University of Miami Libraries to Host Q&A and Pop-Up Photo Display for "Surreal Cuba" Book Launch

The University of Miami Libraries Cuban Heritage Collection is set to host a Q&A session and pop-up photo display for the book launch of "Surreal Cuba" by Manny Ruiz on February 19. This event, taking place at the Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion, will showcase Ruiz's documentary photography project that captures the essence of life during Revolutionary Cuba's "Special Period" from 1993 to 1994. The book features interactive QR codes linking to the stories behind the images, offering a unique glimpse into a pivotal moment in Cuban history.

Manny Ruiz, a renowned photographer, author, and media entrepreneur, embarked on this award-winning project at the age of 23. His work, partially archived at the University of Miami Libraries, has inspired the globally acclaimed Bistec podcast series. During the event, Ruiz will share the stories behind his iconic photographs, discuss the creative process that spanned decades, and reflect on the legacy of "Surreal Cuba" for Cuba and its diaspora.

Attendees will have the opportunity to view selections from "Surreal Cuba," explore the interactive publication firsthand, and engage in a conversation with Ruiz about art, history, and exile.
